Con influencias de cintas serie B de la vieja escuela y movimientos tales como el Cinema of Transgression, el ciclo de cine “Joyas Malditas: una retorcida selección de películas” presenta un conjunto de cortometrajes y largometrajes independientes de bajo presupuesto, hechos por artistas a quienes Bowling admira y que a menudo no han recibido la atención que merecen por parte de los medios debido a su resistencia a adherirse a los cánones de las películas comerciales. With influences of old school B-movies and movements such as the Cinema of Transgression, Kansas Bowling’s film program Cursed Gems presents an array of low-budget independent short and long films made by artists she admires, who often haven’t received enough media attention due to their resistance to not stick to mainstream film cannons. Bowling’s selection shows us the creative possibilities of films when one is not attached to the narratives and aesthetics endorsed by big movie distributors and streaming platforms.
Kansas Bowling (Los Ángeles, 1996) es una directora, guionista, cinematógrafa y actriz americana. En 2016 dirigió B.C. Butcher, distribuida por Troma Entertainment y protagonizada por Kato Kaelin en el papel de cavernícola. Ha dirigido más de 20 videos musicales en película de 8 mm o 16 mm para bandas como Iggy Pop, Death Valley Girls, Collapsing Scenery, Kristeen Young y CRX. En 2019 interpretó a Sandra Good, un miembro de la Familia Manson, en la cinta Once Upon a Time in Hollywood de Quentin Tarantino. El segundo largometraje de Bowling se estrenará este verano.
Kansas Bowling (Los Angeles, 1996) is an American film director, screenwriter, cinematographer and actress. In 2016 she directed B.C. Butcher for Troma Entertainment, starring Kato Kaelin as a caveman. She has directed over 20 music videos shot on 8mm or 16mm film, for bands such as Iggy Pop, Death Valley Girls, Collapsing Scenery, Kristeen Young, and CRX. In 2019, she portrayed Sandra Good, a member of the Manson family, in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Bowling’s second feature film is coming out this summer.

And then you’ll want to go watch all her other short films, because not only are they beautiful but they’re addicting!

Este filme ha tenido últimamente un resurgimiento y las personas que lo han visto lo han descrito como “maldito”. Yo lo vi hace poco porque me lo mandó una amiga. Seguramente ésta es la forma en la que han llegado a él la mayoría de sus espectadores porque, a excepción de quizás algunos videos musicales de Suburban Lawns, no hay nada en el mundo que se le parezca. Desde entonces lo he enviado a muchas personas, incrementando así su audiencia. La cineasta lo hizo después de descubrir que había estado saliendo con un hombre que tenía el cuerpo de su exnovia escondido en el clóset. Como ella estaba tomando una medicación que afectaba su sentido del olfato, nunca notó realmente el olor a cadáver. La cinta que hizo después de esta experiencia es un musical caníbal new wave que me recuerda a Mr. Robbie.
This film has recently gotten a resurgence, and people have been describing it as “cursed”. I saw it recently because a friend sent it to me, which I’m sure is how the majority of the viewers have come across it. Because besides maybe some Suburban Lawns music videos, there is nothing in the world like it. I have definitely sent it to many people since, adding exponentially to its audience. The filmmaker made it after dating a man who she later found out was hiding the body of his ex-girlfriend in their closet. She was on medication that was preventing her from smelling anything, so she never noticed the corpse. The film she made after this experience is a new wave cannibalism musical that reminds me of Mr. Robbie.

Douglas Burgdorff es otro cineasta infravalorado y cuyas películas son ampliamente reconocidas en Vimeo y otros lugares. Su estilo es descarado, gráfico, sexual y usualmente bastante perturbador y este filme no es la excepción. Columbiner Holmie trata sobre un hombre que quiere ser un tirador escolar por la popularidad que adquieren estas personas entre las adolescentes. Como la mayoría de los filmes de Doug, éste te impactará tanto que te hará reír todo el rato. Además, ¡la película es hermosa! Si no te asusta demasiado, ¡asegúrate de revisar el resto de sus cortometrajes!
Douglas Burgdorff is another incredibly underrated filmmaker, whose movies are widely recognized on Vimeo and elsewhere. His style is in-your-face, graphic, sexual and usually pretty fucked up. This film is no exception! Columbiner Holmie is about a man who wants to be a school shooter, because of the cult followings the shooters gain from teenage girls. Like most all of Doug’s films, this will leave you so shocked you’ll laugh the whole way through it. And it’s beautiful! Hace un tiempo actué en este cortometraje y me decepcionó mucho que nunca tuvo la atención que yo creía que merecía. Salió a través de Refinery29, lo que sin duda fue el problema, pues ciertamente no era la audiencia correcta para esta colección de cortometrajes presentados en un falso sitio porno. En el filme hay cuatro chicas (yo soy una de ellas) y cada una tiene su propio video en el que actúa un porno de “casting sofa”, pero los “productores”, en vez de reprimir a las chicas para que se quiten la ropa o hagan algo sexual, quieren que éstas muestren vulnerabilidad emocional. La verdad es que este sitio no infectará tu computadora con un virus, porque definitivamente no es un sitio porno, ¡aunque parezca serlo!
This was a short that I acted in a while ago that I was disappointed it never got the attention I thought it deserved. It came out through Refinery29 which was definitely the problem, because it was certainly the wrong audience for this collection of shorts presented through a fake porn site. There are four girls (I am one of them) who each have their own video acting out “casting couch porn”, except the “producers” berate the girls into showing emotional vulnerability instead of taking off their clothes or performing anything sexual. The site will not give your computer a virus, because it definitely is not real porn, even though it looks like it is!

Troma movies are often disappointing, but every now and then, a good film slips through the cracks. Greg DeLiso’s Hectic Knife is one of them. This black and white violent comedy is about a New York vigilante, and it’s also about bagels. It’s very strange but always inviting, entertaining, and funny.
